So many Machiavellian schemes fail because of people doing random arbitrary things just because they feel like it. Nowhere else do you see that happen more clearly than in tabletop roleplaying.

Discord GM: Excellent!
DM: Just one small point of order: Do you remember the Plunderseeds contingency?
Discord GM: That's the one where countless seeds I planted 1000 years ago capture the Princesses and destroy the Tree of Harmony, right?
DM: Yep, you got it.
Discord GM: As "sequel hooks" go to bring a villain back for Round 2, I still quite like it. Slowly creeping up on the heroes until it's almost too late... What's the news?
DM: Discord senses that the Plunderseeds and their vines have all been vaporized.
Discord GM: *WHAT?!* *HOW?* How did they find them??
DM: I don't know what to tell you, man. Blind luck.
Discord GM: Well, poo. A draconequus can't have anything out here.
DM: I'd say you've been able to have a LOT...
