Princess Celestia had so many opportunities throughout the show to be a truly interesting character. As Friendship is Magic wasted away I personally think it lost most of it's chances....

I mean, if alicorns are not born alicorns, it means that Celestia and her sister were once regular ponies who achieved alicornism. They probably weren't supposed to be immortal like how Cadence and Twilight aren't, but then Luna became Nightmare Moon and Celestia had to wait a thousand years for both her sister's return and for the true harmony to come back to her kingdom, waiting for the elements to be wielded by a new generation. Yes, I'm alleging Celestia was trapped within in her own magic, or at least that's definitely the case for my own headcanon stuff.

When Luna and her finally retire in the last seasons, they cease being alicorns and go back to the regular ponies they originally were.

Their parents' names are Moondust and Helios. I don't know much about them other than Helios is 100% voiced by Brian Stokes Mitchell in my mind.
