These are the last drawings I did last year. It was fun to play around with the dynamics of these characters, and I’ll probably explore their relationships more later on. But for now, here’s what I got.
Notes:
-Thorax and Ember have a marriage-alliance, ruling a joint kingdom between the changelings and dragons.
-They also have a hybrid child named Orchid.
1. A rare bit of affection between Thorax and Ember, who’s a total tsundere in public.
Ember with Orchid’s egg. She’s very uncomfortable with the thought of her offspring, and rarely wanted to handle it, leaving most of the care-giving role to Thorax.
Newborn Orchid was a bit of a mess. Being a half-dragon-half-changeling, it was unclear how they were going to hatch (also note that Orchid is an intersex individual, capable of being either-or). Thorax was smitten by his kid, while Ember went through the odd mom phase of being absolutely disgusted by the way Orchid looked after hatching, and took a while to bond with the weird, lumpy dragon-bug child.
After the initial discomfort wore off, she absolutely doted on her kid when nobody was watching (Thorax never let her live it down after he caught her doing that). In public, she’s polite, but never affectionate to Orchid. That is reserved for the family.
A family outing. Ember typically spent her time during outings with Thorax and Orchid by observing on the sidelines. She did involve herself occasionally, but remained content to just let the others have their fun.
Orchid inherited the ability to twist their head into unnatural positions from Chrysalis (much to the alarm of Ember, who caught them doing it once and nearly blew fire at them over it. Nearly
Orchid decided to try pretending to be a pony after encountering a few during a trip to Equestria. They settled on a unicorn form, purely because they felt it would be easier to perform magic (like transformations) without raising questions. They couldn’t let go of their color scheme though, so it’s easy to spot them in a crowd.
Orchid with their new wings. They molted like a dragon, and grew wings at the time. Both parents were uncertain if Orchid was even capable of molting, being a hybrid and all, but afterward, they spent a lot of time teaching the kid how to fly together, and spent a lot more time travelling (they had previously had to carry Orchid around, which got harder after a few growth spurts).
Lastly, A bit after molting, Orchid went through some identity issues. While not severe, they made the hybrid feel awkward and uncertain. Luckily, daddy Thorax was there to help his kid confront the issue with a bit of firsthand experience and advice, which put Orchid’s mind at ease.
Additional notes:
-Orchid identifies with different pronouns based on different factors. Most of the time they identify as female, but they’re comfortable with anything, really.
-Orchid is a total daddy’s kid. They love being with Thorax most of the time, but that doesn’t mean they don’t like Ember. They just like talking to Thorax about stuff more often.
