Description:
âAlright kids, I guess itâs time we tell you about that mare.â
The living room was filled with ponies, all gathered for a family meeting. A slight hint of tension lingered in the air, but the four adults felt surprisingly at ease with what they were about to share.
âCandy, would you like to start?â
The unicorn mare smiled at the encouraging glances from her family members, holding up the picture that had caused so much drama not long ago. This time, with more confidence. âThis is your grandmother, children. My and Aunt Luluâs mother. Her name was Galaxy Guard.â
âShe was a bi-â
âA bit of a meanie,â Holly interrupted, shooting a warning glance at Firefly. âShe hadâŚa lot of issues.â
âLike what?â Balletomane asked.
âYou see, her father died when she was a little bit older than Ollie,â Turq explained. âBecause of me.â
Hydie gasped. âYOU killed her dad?â
âYou knew her?â Ollie asked.
âIt was an accident. I made a mistake in firing. It happens all the time in the guard, but this time ended badly.â Turq recalled. âAnd yes, I did know her. She was my best friend before it happened.â
âAnd after that, she just became so hung up on her dad dying, so obsessed with hating Turq, she wouldnât think about anything else. It was all I ever heard out of her,â Firefly continued.
âBecause she missed her dad,â Candy added. âShe loved him, and he was gone. Of course she was sad and angry.â
âBut she sure let her anger get the best of her. Yâsee, she had this huge grudge against yer Grandma, but yer Mommy and I loved each other despite both oâ them tryna keep us apart.â Holly shot a knowing glance at Turq.
âEven you, Grandma?â
âYepâŚâ Turq nodded somberly. âI shouldnât have. But I did.â
âIt got to the point where we decided to follow our hearts and run away together!â Candy snuggled into Hollyâs fur. âIt was like a dream come true! UntilâŚâ
âYer grandmother kicked her out,â Holly finished the sentence, wrapping a comforting arm around her wife. âSaid she didnât want to see her ever again as long as she âassociated with her daddyâs killerâ or however she put it. She chose her grudge over her daughter.â
âWhat kinda mom is she?â Hydie spoke up. âIt looks like sheâs the one who needed to get outta there, not Mommy!â
âThatâs basically what I said,â Firefly smirked slightly. âI wasnât gonna let her treat our kid like shiâlike dirt. So I told her to get out of my house. She wouldnât put her kid first, but I did.â She wrapped a wing around Candy.
Candy chuckled slightly at this, then continued. âWe didnât want to cut her out of our lives like thisâat least, I didnât. I hoped sheâd come back and realize she was wrong, and apologize. If she did, I know Iâd give her a chance, butâŚI donât think thatâs likely to happen.â
âThat makes sense, I guessâŚâ Ollie pondered. âBut why didnât you tell us about her? Why do you only have one picture of her?â
âI burned-â
âWe didnât want to hurt you,â Candy interrupted her mom. âWe didnât want to burden you in knowing that you have a grandmother who isnât in your life, and that she wasnât the best pony. I kept a picture because sheâs my mother and I love her, butâŚwe didnât want you to deal with the bad feelings that we did. And we especially didnât want you to try to look for her. ItâsâŚbest that you never meet her.â
âI donât think I want to meet her,â Ollie admitted.
âMe neither!â
âShe sounds like a meanie!â
âBut thanks for telling us about her. Now we donât have to wonder anymore. And I can finish my project!â
The four adults chuckled at Ollieâs childlike innocence, gathering around to watch him color the last pony into his family tree. They thought theyâd never have to think about that pink mare again, and normally theyâd hate to bring her up again. But this time feltâŚrelieving, like they could finally move on. For real this time.
Galaxy Guard had her place in each of their lives, even the kidsâ, but she was only that: a small part of their narrative. A small part that had to be acknowledged in all its goodness and ugliness in order to finally achieve closure. And they had done just that.
