Once someone yells “I charge,” it’s very tempting for the GM to immediately capitulate and start combat in the party’s implied underprepared state, to teach the trigger-happy player a lesson.

But they never learn. They never, ever learn.

Gallus (RD): So are they real or not?

Gallus (RD): Seriously? I can’t even remember the last time I rolled that.

DM: I can’t remember the last time you had a decent bonus in non-Strength skills.

DM: Well… They’re definitely corporeal and aware. But compared to what they’re supposed to be, they can’t help but seem lacking.
