Working process:
Hey there. After teasing the background for my next commission, here it is A humanized interpretation of My little Pony’s Crystal kingdom rulers Princess Cadance and Shining Armor. I know that, because a) I googled, b) I know things and c) … ya… you got me. I’m a brony. Can girls also be bronys? Just asking… For a friend… |D So. After I recieved the request last month, my fan-heart was bumping really fast. I adore the series for its beautiful stories and content, on the same time I never really thought about expressing that love besides doing some fan-ponys in chibi-style. As you all might know I’m not a fan of furries, so… nope. First I wanted to decline, but the commissioner was asking for humanized versions… and it got me thinking. As you can witness I accept, and well… that was one big thing to do. I thought having animals as reference might make things rather easy, as I have a lot of freedom. It didn’t. Mostly because I am me, but I was nonstop stressed thinking of all the fan-hearts saying… umm… I didn’t expect them to look like that. I put a lot of thought into their bodies and faces, as there are also differences in the shapes of the ponys. Shining Armor… well, I’m sorry ‘bout that, but researching him a lot I felt like he looks like that high school football pro that a lot of girls have a crush on, but… he’s not that much of a thinker xD I tried to portrait a hot guy with strong arms, curly undone hair and not freshly shaven (as he appears with his little child) and… with a dumb heavy face xD Cadance on the other hand… ignoring those anorexia ponys in manehattan and rarity, she appears to me to be most likely that (cheap) instagram girl posting pics of herself all day long. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cadance, and I think she has a lovely character, but if there is a pony that looks like a bitch, it’s probably the rose one with the curly rainbow extensions, eyeliner as thick as her hooves and a little coronet (for whatever reason she wears that. I get it. You are a princess. Mi Amore Cadenza. No, please call me princess cadance… umm… why not just cadance… you get what I mean xD). That’s why she got a real beauty face with good bone structure, combined with her trademark eyeliner. For the hair, I really didn’t want to do bright pink hair, I gave her a dark blonde hair color and used the washed out color effect of the current hair trend for her pink and violet highlights. And I am very proud of this idea. I hope you like it as much as I do. To include the cutie marks I decided to give them tattoos on the hips to represent them.
So, after having dealt with the shock of doing my best to get their faces and bodys the right way, only some cover up’s were missing. If I can speak that openly, my commissioner didn’t care about a dressed version xD But I wanted to do one to show. As I am always super-stressed at the end of the month finishing those pictures, as I am a detail-lover and super bad with time management, I wanted to challenge myself doing something easy. No references, no stress, just an easy cover up, voila. That was before my other self came by and said. No. You will not finish this as easy. My first thought was just some light rays to cover the lewd parts. Then I thought, hey, why not doing underwear, thats rather easy, doesn’t take that long, and can be a beautiful langerie print… Then I thought, hey, why not doing the wings like a victoria’s secret asset to the bra. Then I thought, well, if I have wings I need to do things right. Not just underwear, I need straps, lace and more. Good. this only took 3 days, (instead of 1 evening) but… I’m fine. Shining Armor will be easy. Just undies. Or… He’s called Shining Armor after all… why not give him some armor. An easy silver one. Or… why not stick to his original armor and do an interpretation… but still easy, only in violet and gold. But… he’s a prince. Why not give him a armor with embossing of his cutie mark and portraits of his wife and sister, and sparkle and… argh >.< another 2 days gone. The easy underwear became old fashioned trousers with star buttons and the cutie mark as embroidery. WHATEVER. But for the background I wont stress myself. I’ll take a stock picture of a palace, done. Maybe I include the beautiful mosaic windows of canterlot. And as you can see… I ended up drawing the complete interior design of the canterlot palaxe even including the total unneccessary zebra pattern on the pillars WHICH ISN’T EVEN VISIBLE BECAUSE THOSE TWO FATTIES COMPLETELY COVERED IT… and now you know why I always take 2 weeks of pure stress finishing a picture. It’s just me ^
