“Kamerad!”
Wolfenstein 3D, the grandfather of first-person shooter games, released in 1992, not only became a mark in games’ history and heavily influenced the games after it (most of the current ones owes a lot to it), but also was the game that made Wolfenstein so famous. However, it wasn’t the first title of the series.
Back in 1981, Castle Wolfenstein was launched to Apple II and later ported to DOS, Commodore 64 and Atari 8-bit. Both games have the protagonist, basically, escaping the castle and shooting those wacky Nazis. But while Wolfenstein 3D was more action-packed, Castle Wolfenstein was a stealth game (a few years before Hideo Kojima’s first Metal Gear game was introduced to world).
You can see more about the game here: http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle\_Wolfenstein
Castle Wolfenstein and its sequel (Beyond Castle Wolfenstein) are more obscure compared with Wolfenstein 3D and didn’t age very well, controlling the character and shooting were way hard than you can expect, and opening boxes could take minutes (180 seconds, as an example; you can speed up the opening process by shooting the box, but it’s not a good idea, as some have grenades inside.). By other hand, they contributed with elements we still see in modern games and Castle Wolfenstein was one of the first games about World War II, if not the very first.
And just for fun, I made this. I admit it could have been way better, the trickiest part was making the pony bodies wide enough to place the symbols. I took base in the Commodore 64’s version of the game, mostly because the character and enemy sprites are more goofier if compared with the original from Apple II. Look at it in Youtube and be prepared to giggle a bit. XD
Despite the flaws, I really hope you enjoy it. ^
