Description:
Celestia and Luna are rumored to have been born alicorns. The origins of their parents are still unknown, and the royal sisters don't disclose much information about their starting years or their family. Some even theorize that they're not sisters, but rather, joined forces together and adopted the titles for each other.
A few things are known, though, at least from the history books.
Celestia and Luna rule alongside each other. While they don't have a term for their form of government, it'd be similar to a republic, where citizens have their rights and can vote on certain matters. Celestia covers daily matters, and Luna protects the night.
For years, they did rule together. But how were they equals if Celestia got the spotlight? She was the one always recognized, always talked about... But did Celestia look through everyone's dreams to ensure they weren't being tormented? No. Did she battle the night terrors that haunted the living? No. And yet, Luna got no recognition. For "equals," Luna felt very cheated.
It was a shock that she turned against her royal sister. No one was really aware that Luna felt this way, not even Celestia. The very nightmares Luna swore to defeat had consumed her.
For one thousand quiet years, Celestia ruled alone with her sister trapped on the moon. Luna's existence was quickly forgotten. It even became a myth, an "it's just a bedtime story to scare foals." But Luna was still very much alive.
Upon returning, Luna was quick to adjust. 1,000 years gives a pony a lot of time to think, and she decided she'd start over, start fresh. The two ruled alongside each other once again, but it only took a few years for Luna to grow jealous again.
Starlight, through some... questionable methods, taught the two of them that their roles were equally as important and equally recognized and valued. Celestia and Luna rarely quarrel over these matters anymore, but of course have their sisterly arguments, which usually consist of "no, that's my hair brush."
Both are dramatically protective over each other. Through the mistakes they've made and the lessons they've learned, they swear to always protect each other, no matter what.
Fun Facts
While Luna appears much younger than Celestia, they're only a few years apart. When Luna was banished to the moon, she was trapped in pretty much every way possible. The magic used to keep her prisoner stopped her aging, which is why when she returns, she becomes much younger than Celestia and is way younger than she should be. Her internal magic attempts to catch her up when she returns to Equestria. This is why she is so quickly seen with solid blue hair that later becomes wavy, all within the span of a year. She is back to her "normal" age in a way.
For maybe about 300 years on the moon, Luna plotted her revenge. By around year 600, she just wanted to come home. She regretted everything and would beg her sister to let her come home. Celestia never heard her. When she does return, she is briefly consumed by the darkness and it practically controls her. This is why Luna wasn't just banished again when the elements were used against her, but her inner darkness was.
The darkness had some permanent effects on Luna's appearance. She still is considered a beauty, since her color scheme is extremely rare. She had normal pegasus wings before her transformation into Nightmare Moon. Upon returning to her "normal" form, Luna's wings became bat-like and parts of her coat became much darker.
Celestia's color scheme is actually pretty common. However, the wavy flowy hair is a trait only celestials have, which is pretty much "God/Goddess" level. Cadence is very close to becoming a celestial, but Twilight still has a little way to go.
Celestia is nearly twice as tall as the average pony. The only pony who can reach eye level with her is Big Mac. Applejack is just a little taller than Luna.
All alicorns carry every pony race's trait in their bones. Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and Twilight (excluding Flurry, since she's not a true alicorn) all have unicorn magic, pegasus flight, and earth pony strength.
Just like Luna's hair used to just be light blue, Celestia's used to be pink.
Luna is the only alicorn to not have cloven hooves.
Celestia and Luna both hold the titles of "Queen," but much prefer "Princess" because "Queen" makes them sound old ):<
They both have a natural sisterly bond, but also have a sort of mental bond. They can sense when the other is distressed, even if they're not together. This mental connection begins after Luna returns from her banishment.
I haven't drawn these girls in a while! (: Thought it would cheer me up, and it definitely did. I'm experimenting a lot with their designs, and I changed up a few things. As always, working more with realistic anatomy
I left a lot of this up to interpretation but I always love answering questions! <3
Barely any shading to show their solid redesigns to avoid confusing it with different lighting :3
Thanks for stopping by to take a look!
