Especially before she turned into an alicorn, Twilight was far from being the most physically fit girl of the Mane 6 and had close to no combat or fighting experience. After Chrysalis' failed invasion of Canterlot, she realized just how badly outmached she'd be against her future enemies, and asked her mentor and Luna to spar with her. At first, the two alicorns only threw some light punches and kicks to Twilight's face and body, taking great care in not roughing her up too much. Unfortunately for herself, the bookworm unicorn made the fatal mistake of saying to their face that this was too easy.

The two royal sisters couldn't have had a better excuse to take the metaphorical gloves off and remind her just how outmatched she really was. Celestia pulled her student into a full nelson, leaving her utterly defenseless against Luna, who wailed on her for over ten minutes. Just as she was about to pass out, her mentor casted a healing spell on her and released her from her hold, letting Twilight falsely believe that the beatdown was over... Until Luna put her back in a full nelson too, while the sun princess took her place in front of the magenta unicorn, cracking her knuckles and getting ready to have her turn to beat her up.
