Combat in TRPGs sometimes feels like a zero-sum game. If the DM is having fun and being successful with it, the players are probably not having a lot of fun. If the players are having fun, the DM is probably being hampered.

Which is why I love, love, love minions. Plenty of targets for the players to feel good using their big crazy stuff on, without the DM feeling like all their tactical options are getting locked down.

…Except when the minions also apply debilitating status effects every round. Then we’re back to “the DM’s having fun but you aren’t.” It’s a delicate balancing act.

Twilight Sparkle: Uh, right! Let’s hope this all goes off correctly… I start by casting Maze of Mirrors!

DM: Oooooh. Nice choice. All the ninjas you hit are immobilized and take a -4 penalty to attack rolls for a turn. The ones you missed are still slowed for a turn, which is troublesome for ninjas.

Twilight Sparkle: Perfect… Perfect! I’m going to go ahead and use my action point. And I cast Twist of Space… on Imoen’s group… teleporting them into the hall, behind the Fountain of Flame!

DM: And slowed at that. Ouch. Anyway, Fluttershy…

Twilight Sparkle: A ha ha ha HA. You thought I was finished. That was just the setup… I still have my minor action.

DM: Uh-oh.
