Description:
Orange Swirl Ref V.3.5
by Xaika
Edit: I Added so many things. Updated with Rainbow power, Gala outfit, and Equestria girls form. I also added in a few of her personal items: her Laptop, The Orange Chocolate Swirl Cake that she got her cutie mark by making and creating the recipe for, Her notepad, and her favorite apron (A gift from her mother. She wears it whenever she cooks)!
Edit 2: Added an accurate color palette for those who are going to draw her in the future (myself included). My Shading style does affect her colors slightly, so I wanted all of her base colors to be clearly represented (:
( I would say sorry and tell you all that I will never post a new ref for her again….but idk if I can keep that promise ;; )

Father:
Aplet Cotlet always worries about Orange, thinking she spends far too much time on her blog, and needs to go out more often. He owns a candy business in Manehattan, and loves to make home-made candies for his family. Orange and Aplet don’t have much in common, but orange gets her sense of humor from him, and they do make each other laugh at times. He and orange tend to get in small squabbles, but in the end, she loves her pop.
Mother:
Orange Swirl has always had a good relationship with her mother, Pinot Noir. Her mother is the owner of a winery chain that is fairly well respected in the area. Incidentally, they are best known for their Pinot noir wine, which won a best of class wine award in the Canterlot grape festival a few years back. As a filly, Pinot encouraged Orange’s dream of being a Chef, by teaching Orange how to cook. Some of her fondest memories come from decorating cookies, flipping pancakes, and burning a few oven mitts with her mom.
Brother:
Orange’s younger brother is a rascal of a colt. His name is Snippet, and Orange gets along quite well with him (even if they like to tease each other). He doesn’t have his cutie mark yet, and has considered joining the cutie mark crusader branch of Manehattan, though he’s deemed it ‘uncool’ until recently. He looks up to orange, and vows that he’ll be her rival one day, whatever that means. However, she doesn’t have a very good relationship with his pet- a parrot, because for some reason it likes to sit on her head, and peck at her when she’s trying to think.
Best Friend:
Cookie Doo and Orange Swirl go way back. They met when Orange went into Cookie’s family’s bakery and ordered a cinnamon roll with her notepad. Cookie was instantly curious with orange, and they connected a bit, learning that they even went to the same school! Orange loved spending time at her friend’s house. They lived in the bakery, and Cookie’s mom was always baking something sweet. Both have their flaws, Orange with her voice and Cookie not having her cutie mark, but the two learned to stand up for each other. They often joke that Orange has enough talent for the two, and Cookie has enough voice for the both of them, and together they make one whole ‘normal’ pony. They learned to not care what other fillies thought about them, because they had each other and that was all they needed! As time went on, the girls formed such a strong bond, that they decided to move out together and find an apartment in the city. As of now, they are room mates and couldn’t be closer friends.
Job(s)
Currently learning to become a Chef
(She is an apprentice at a local Restaurant, and is taking cooking courses )
Part-time job as a writer of the ‘food and drink’ column for the local newspaper
She also writes a blog where she posts cute recipes and dishes, and critiques local stores/restaurants (though this doesn’t give her any extra money)
Personality:
Orange is generally polite to acquaintances. She loves to help out and listen, if you have a few things you want to get off your chest. She likes to think, especially when developing new recipes, and often gets lost in her thoughts as a result. One thing she loves to do is take risks with her recipes, trying new things and challenging herself to think outside the box. Though, at home or with people she’s very comfortable around she can also be a bit sassy. She loves humor, and joking around- however she can become a bit obnoxious with this at times. Maybe taking a prank a bit too far, or joking around when there’s something serious to be done.
She loves to post on her blog, making her a bit out of focus when she’s on her computer. She might need something repeated twice if she looks up at you with a confused face. She gets really excited by things she sees on the internet- be it new recipes or a cooking show, and aspires to post things that will make others just as happy as she feels when discovering them.
History:
As a young filly, Orange had a fairly normal life. She made friends easily and had fun in daycare. Her parents, and teachers noticed her love to laugh and to make others laugh around her. One year, her parents even bought her a little journal where she could write down her favorite jokes! She was a silly filly and a bit of a troublemaker, for she would often reach into mother’s cookie dough when she thought no one was looking or mess up the kitchen when she tried to cook by herself. Orange doesn’t remember much of these days, but she loves looking back on home videos to see recordings of herself as a rambunctious little filly.
However, in her first year in school, Orange came down with a serious viral infection in her throat. She was out of school for a week but seemed to get better. Well, except for one problem. It became increasingly hard for Orange to speak, if at all, and at times it was hard for her to breathe. Her worried parents took her into the doctor, where they found that the strain from her infection had caused her vocal chords to become weak. Her left vocal chord was not moving and her right barely did. The trauma to her throat had caused vocal chord paralysis. Fortunately, since her vocal chords became paralyzed when they were open, she was able to breathe despite slight discomfort at times. Orange ended up having to go through surgery, and, though the paralysis was cured, the scarring from these events left her voice raspy and sore whenever she spoke.
Since Orange was fairly young when this happened, she has adjusted to using other means of communication. Though she can technically speak, she chooses not to, finding it a pain since people barely understand her anyway. She started writing her thoughts down in her old journal and uses facial expressions and body language to express her general mood, while she will write down messages for more detailed responses and replies. She usually carries a notepad and a pencil with her to do so.
Orange found her passion in cooking over time. It was mostly a hobby at first, for she wanted writing to be her focus in life. However, there was a presentation in her class for a culinary institution, and she fell in love with the idea that her hobby could be a bigger part of her future. She started to bake endlessly. Filling the fridge with cookies, cakes, quiches, and more! She would offer to make dinner for her family often. It became so obsessive for her, that at one point her brother and Cookie Doo started to joke that she was falling in love with the kitchen! As time went on, she lessened her food production to a sane level, earned enough money to start her apprenticeship and started to dabble in her own recipes. She loved oranges, for they have always been her namesake, and she wondered if she could add them to a few of her favorite dishes. It took quite a bit of work, and a few upset stomachs before she was able to craft the perfect recipe: an Orange Chocolate Swirl Cake of her own design! Excited by this, she instantly went and offered her family and best friend a piece of homemade cake. Though, she was disappointed as they seemed more interested in the mark that showed up on her flank. (Hey, that rhymed!)
After Orange got her cutie mark, she started searching for jobs in the cooking field. However, When looking through the online news site she was subscribed to, She noticed that her favorite column was coming to an end because the writer was going into retirement. She was strongly upset about this, for she thought the column was a great way to get people into cooking fresh foods for low prices. She wrote a letter to the editor, explaining her stance, and why the column was so important to this generation of ponies. The editor didn’t take her message too seriously, and wrote back telling her, with slight sarcasm, to write the column herself if she was so invested with it. That’s exactly what she did. She sent in a humor-filled column on making easy, healthy, meals from instant ramen. Her fire, and writing skills impressed the Editor, who called her in for an interview before adding the column back into the paper… with a new writer.
She now resides in an apartment complex, with her best friend, Cookie Doo, as she writes her column from home and interns at restaurants.
