Description:

Day for rising; night for sleep

As in heaven, so below

Chaos banish; order keep

Ever may it thusly go

Perfect cosmic symmetry

Sisters of the moon and sun

Cornerstone of harmony

Never let it be undone!

Ascendant (99 A.L.) by Crystal Shimmer.

The Alicorn Ascendency, as historians would come to call the beginning of the Sisters’ reign, reached its apex a century into their rule, and was celebrated accordingly. Their first few years were not easy, as change is always difficult; there were still a few who refused their leadership, and lesser quarrels took place all over the country before Equestria could comfortably settle under the alicorns’ wings in truth. Once it was all said and done however, Equestria entered a new time of peace. This golden era was marked on their calendars as the Age of Light, to represent the descent of these celestial bodies to rule over ponykind and disrupt the darkness of Discord’s control over the country.

The Spring Equinox of the hundredth year found Equestria thriving beyond belief on just about any front; relationships with nearby nations were at their peak, harvests were plentiful, and the population continued to grow. Having long graduated from the Council’s regency, Celestia and Luna proved to be wise rulers, benevolent and true to their subjects. They would both listen closely to their people, holding court out in the streets of the city and faraway villages, working hard every day (and night!) to make their ponies’ lives better. The Sun and Moon shone down lovingly on their growing nation, and were doubly beloved in return, as ponies from all over expressed their adoration for the Sisters through poetry, art and song.

One such painting portraits the Sisters the day before the grand celebration that would take place to mark the hundredth year of their reign. Queen Celestia Aetheria of Equestria, Guardian of the Sun, is as pink and lovely as the dawn, having risen from her sleep no more than one month previous to the marked date. Her finery is airy and light, as winter gives way to spring. Queen Luna Selene of Equestria, Keeper of the Moon, is nearly waxed to the fullness of her majesty, barely a few nights away from a full moon. She’s dressed modestly after a diplomatic visit to the frozen north, where the odd race of the crystal ponies have made their lair. On their noble heads are the Twin Crowns of Equestria, some of the most precious relics made by ponykind; the Solar Queen’s first crown was forged in sunfire, from the melted gold of the previous tribe leaders’ royal and military finery, with its solid shape to represent an united Equestria. On the other hoof, in these times of peace the Nightbringer wears a crown hewn from the crystal that saw their death and rebirth, in the caverns deep below the earth where the Tree of Harmony resides, a three-pointed tiara that represents the main pony tribes that have made them their sovereigns. Autumn would give way to Winter and ponies would shiver under its snowy shadow, but in their hearts they believed this time to be a Summer that would never end; such was the mood of the time. With Harmony itself singing in their hearts, surely this peace would know no end.

They didn’t know, yet. How could they have known?
