It’s established that the map hadn’t worked since Starlight used it for time travel. Roughly halfway through the season do the group find the right idea to repair the map and getting it to work again. The problem is, in the time it took for them to fix it, how many friendship problems went unanswered and due to the severity of most of these problems (The equal ponies and the ponies at war come to mind), how many ponies suffered because of it?
