In 1552, the Muscovite army, led by Ivan the Terrible, laid siege to the Volga Tatar capital of Kazan. After weeks of mining and heavy bombardment, the walls of Kazan faltered, and tens of thousands of Tatars were massacred by the Tsar’s army. In Moscow, the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed was constructed in commemoration of Ivan’s conquest of Kazan.
