“Finally!” Twilight cheered. She and Bubba were presented with the battery they needed to power the red smoke machine.
“Let’s take this and get the machine fired up before he stops us,” Bubba proclaimed. They did so, heading out of the room and through Playcare. As they walked along, Twilight thought about something she had on her mind.
“Bubba, how much do you know about the Bigger Body Initiative?” The alicorn wasn’t sure if she should’ve asked this and saw it was a little upsetting for the clever critter.
“It’s not something we like talking about,” Bubba confirmed, “Despite how well I remember it.”
Twilight glanced at the other critters as they walked to the power room. The critters all looked nervous as they heard Bigger Bodies. “Listen, if you don’t want to talk about it…”
“Maybe it is best if you know,” Bubba proclaimed. “It was all done because Playtime Co wanted to improve the costs and functionality of the company. Huggy was security, Mommy Longlegs helped with the children’s learning, and Catnap helped keep them well rested. The bigger bodies were essentially lab rats for the company, most of them were… orphans.”
Twilight grimaced at that thought, and it was disturbing to the others too. “Does… that include you?” she asked.
Bubba sighed. “We were made to help keep the orphans happy and fill certain rolls. Crafty being creative, Hoppy with exercise, and then there’s me with education.” He looked down at his hooves before holding his lightbulb pendant. “Playtime made me the smartest of the Smiling Critters and I know plenty of things, such as the layout of Playcare and the factory, the experiments, the company history, the events of the Hour of Joy… But despite all of that knowledge, I don’t even remember my own name.”
Twilight couldn’t imagine how horrible it would be. Sure they went by their critter names, but Bubba and the others used to be humans. She glanced at the battery again before looking stern. “We’re going to put an end the prototype’s plans,” she proclaimed, “After this is all over, there could be a chance we get you all out of this factory.”
This idea helped to bring a smile to the critters’ faces, including Bubba’s. “Let’s just get this battery there before things change.” Twilight agreed as they hurried off to the red smoke machine, unsure if they were being watched.
