Meet Gaura, the daughter of Zecora and Gilda! Being a young griffin zebra hybrid in Equestria was not easy for Gaura. Three species made up her blood and body, and not one of them was pony. Even her name, inspired by a beautiful flower of the same name and griffin naming conventions, was foreign on pony tongues. She tried to take this in stride, as her dear mothers encouraged, but she could never shake the distinct feeling of otherness. It wasn't just her heritage. Her personality when compared to most of the ponies she met was dull, awkward, and altogether lacking whatever unique ability to communicate others possessed. Her mothers never seemed to mind, and neither did the flora and fauna of the Everfree forest which she was becoming more and more attached to. She couldn't tell whether the odd ones were her or the ponies in town and at school and at the shops, but the ponies seemed to have their minds made up. For years, Gaura felt a brewing sense of shame and displacement in Equestria.

It wasn't until she realized her passion for botany that Gaura found a place she felt she truly belonged. Surrounded by and creating new hybrid plants, Gaura blossomed into a passionate researcher with an active mind. The harsh expressions and hushed whispers of the ponyfolk faded from her mind with time, and soon the pain was nothing but a distant memory. She wasn't an "other" there in her homemade greenhouse/laboratory- she was home. And, she insisted to herself, it didn't bother her even a little bit that she had no friends to share her beautiful research with.
