One of my favorite background ships, let’s do it!
Octavia and Vinyl Scratch met when Octavia was looking for a place to live in Ponyville after graduating from Canterlot’s Music Academy. Having grown up in a middle-class family and being lucky enough to receive a scholarship to school, Octavia knew that her future depended on her skill and not her wealth or long-line of pure-blood Canterlot Elites. And after graduating from school, she could hardly afford to continue living in the city. Octavia had originally planned on moving in with her friend from the Academy, Lyra Heartstrings, but found out that she had already found a roommate of her own. Lyra highly recommended getting a roomie to Octavia, since it helped with saving money and gave the chance to make a new friend. So when Octavia spotted an ad in the paper saying a musician in Ponyville was looking to rent out the spare room in her house, Octavia immediately met with Vinyl Scratch. And being fairly desperate to find a place to live, Octavia accepted the moment Vinyl offered the spare room to her.
It didn’t take long for the two to realize that they were quite different in just about everything: personality, schedules, music taste, even food. They began to butt heads every so often, but it didn’t take long for the two to apologize and make up, usually with one or the other ordering from their favorite restaurant and playing a board game. Even though they were different, they ended up learning to bond over other things, like their passion for music. Vinyl even told her roomie that she had also attended the same academy Octavia graduated from, but she had dropped out for multiple reasons. They started to appreciate each other’s differences, even if Vinyl was up until all hours of the night. Once they saw themselves as close/best friends, Vinyl finally told Octavia that she was a vampire. Octy thought she was kidding or playing some kind of prank on her. She ends up figuring out Vinyl wasn’t lying during a Harvest Moon and initially panics, but ends up being more curious than terrified. Octy asks her question after question, to which Vinyl answers casually and only occasionally jokes about being the reason for bad things happening through history.
Their relationship turned to something more intimate when Vinyl and Octavia shared a rare night in together with far too much alcohol. The next morning, they both expected the other to end up regretting it and wanting to pretend that the night before never happened. But as it turns out, Octy and Vinyl admit (with a lot of stammering and nervous laughs) that they had enjoyed their time together and had wanted to act on their chemistry before then. Affection behind closed doors turned into dates around Ponyville and nuzzles in public. No one seemed to understand how the two were dating, seeming like complete opposite ponies, but they didn’t seem to care much about the opinion of others.
After being together for years, they ended up making a hasty and excitable choice to get married at the court house by Mayor Mare. They had two witnesses, one for Vinyl and one for Octavia, and had never felt like such a quick decision was more right. Their honeymoon was spent at home, where they enjoyed just lounging around the house and not having to work for a couple of weeks. After a few months, Octavia and Vinyl figured out they were expecting a little foal of their own, while all of their friends placed bets on who the kid would take after. Beat Drop was born and it was clear she had also inherited Vinyl’s curse, but fortunately, Octavia had already learned how to handle a vampire in the house. How hard could a baby vamp be?
