Ruby is a wasteland-savvy filly nearly out of foalhood; blunt as a hammer, vulgar by habit, haunted by her past, casually suspicious of strangers and very fortunate to have survived as long as she has. Ruby’s got the ego of a full-grown mare (and then some). Although, it’s partially a front to hide her deep insecurities and pain. She’s very prone to snapping at people, metaphorically and literally. Furthermore, She suffers from paranoia and trauma, starting from a very young age; a week after the day she got her cutie mark, she and her family encountered the Steel Coffins Raider clan on a caravan trip; after killing the caravan guards, they murdered her parents right in front of her in cold blood for their food, water, and supplies, then foalnapped her. Shortly after the Steel Coffins had murdered her parents, they forced her into a knife fight with another filly by the name of Sugarplum (whom she had become friends with on the trip), within a crude arena that consisted of a blood-caked dirt pit surrounded by barbed wire as part of a sickeningly horrible initiation/hazing ritual to see who would be “accepted” into the Steel Coffins Raider clan and who would die trying. Immediately after her Pyrrhic victory, in order to “reward” her, they pinned her down and forcibly tattooed over her cutie mark with the image of a dagger with a ruby pommel over a bleeding slash wound as her “new cutie mark” and bestowed upon her the name “Bloody Gash”, as parts of their sick ritual to symbolically represent her assimilation into their Raider gang and indoctrinate her. After that, Ruby was sometimes forced to kill or steal for her clan, or else they wouldn’t provide her with everyday meals.
Moreover, although she doesn’t often show it willingly, she deeply respects (former cryotube inhabitant in Stable 111 from the Great War) Lance Longmane for saving her life more than once, including his willingness to help her escape her life as a Raider when she was unwillingly dragged along with the rest of the Steel Coffins when Sindicate admin Patchwork hired them to assist other Raider clans in infiltrating and pillaging Stable 111. Furthermore, despite her doubts or frustrations, she secretly appreciates Lance’s efforts to mentor her in ways to better herself, such as teaching her morals, basic social skills and how to read.
