For better explanation of mixing and using chlorine bleach, I recommend this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maTvXz0ayUc

Note: I notice that there’s one significant difference between this clip and my government’s recommendation. My government advice against using spray bottle. Instead they advice wiping surfaces with rag or mop.

Diluted chlorine bleach solution is a powerful disinfectant that the facility I work in constantly use. However, despite having pros like being cheap, effective and easy to make, chlorine bleach is also dangerous. The reason is that Chlorine is an oxidant of organic molecules that, with enough concentration, could be deadly to any organic life form, such as bacteria, virus and ,of course, human. There are instances of people who inhale high concentrated chlorine gas which result in serious lung damage. This is why it is vital to use the product with caution. If we use it well, it is a very accessible product to help with this public crisis. Our government recommend use 500ppm diluted solution for environmental disinfection at least once a day. Of course, this is health-care facility standard, I wager in household one doesn’t need to do quite as frequent.

500 ppm is enough to kill off enveloped virus, including SARS and MERS. Despite empirical evidence haven’t established yet, it is still perfectly reasonable that 500ppm solution would be effective against COVID-19, another enveloped virus. But don’t use these solution for hand washing. They are meant for environment, not human skin.

Hope this could be helpful for anyone who is wondering is there an alternative to alcohol when it comes to clean your environment.
