For everybody else, bust out your daisy chains and big comedy hair bows, ‘cuz it’s time for the ballad of JG Treehugger and Songbird Serenade!

First thing’s first: no, Songbird Serenade can not see through her massive wall of bangs.  This is not least for the fact that she is completely blind (to quote fellow pop star Rara, she was born this way).  So-called handicaps like this are usually regarded as a ticket to a lifetime of failure amongst pegasi, who are not at all known for being sympathetic to the differently abled (“no sight, no flight”).  Despite the open criticism and lack of support from their local community, Songbird’s loving parents taught their child to fly anyway.  Lacking interest in becoming the fastest or most agile pegasus like all her peers, Songbird concentrated on her vocal chops and songwriting ability.  She would eventually garner much success as a ghost writer and backup singer for Sapphire Shores and, eventually, as a star in her own right.

Songbird’s free and easy outward persona made stardom look like a breeze, but in reality it was anything but.  Songbird inwardly struggled with exhaustive anxiety and oppressive shyness.  She had likewise learned from an early age that she would be negatively judged for her blindness, which she mostly kept secret behind a huge mane and the assistance from an entourage of handlers.  As much as she enjoyed making music, she preferred nothing else but to retreat to her Sydneigh beach house, surrounded by adoptive pets and little else.

It would be here that, during a meditation session on the sand, fate would send world-wanderer Treehugger trekking past Songbird’s roost.  Tree explained that she was out to see a little bit of everything in honor of somepony very important (more on that another time).  Songbird quickly took to the gentle earth pony’s honest laugh and lack of fawning, judgement or demands.  The two became friends and, in time, would become a couple.  Songbird gives Treehugger the best reason possible to put down physical and emotional roots, and Tree calms “Birdy”‘s nervousness and keeps her centered on what’s important.  Tree and Songbird are only the second couple to take up Twilight on her egg-splicing spell, resulting in the eventual birth of their daughter Chandelier Swing.

Design wise, it goes without saying my Songbird is inspired by Sia.  I am not, however, out to create a perfect caricature, opting instead to cherry-pick little idiosyncrasies (like that painfully cute snaggletooth).  Her eyes, when you can see them, are under-detailed, which is artist shorthand for blindness and everybody knows it.  As for Treehugger, she’s another of my big meaty Earth pony girls.  However, unlike such devastating warrior-women as Babs and Plaid Stripes, Tree is a lot less interested in maintaining her killer abs and more interested in chomping on junk food (guess why; I’ll wait).  She’s also especially fluffy-furry…some mares might find this unacceptable and stallionish, but I can’t see Treehugger giving much of a damn.  More hair, don’t care.  Besides, Birdy likes her extra warm and cuddly.
