Description:

I’ve been looking through what concept art for the MLP movie is available online (I haven’t gotten the book, yet. I want it, but I don’t know if I want it bad enough to warrant the pain of keeping it out of the way of my family :/) and a lot of it is pretty cool stuff! I’m not usually one to obsess over what a work could have been and to cry over this or that concept getting cut — let’s face it, that’s inevitable when a work is being made. But one thing I do think would have been pretty awesome if it had made the cut was an early concept for Capper.

See, originally he was a fox named Mendax (Latin for “liar”, there’s still some cognates to that in Italian — e.g., “mentire”, “to lie”; “mendace”; “untrustworthy”). He would also have had a scorpion tail, though, which had a mouth and a mind of its own. Supposedly, this tail would have expressed his true motives while he did his con man act. To me, that gave the impression that when Mendax laid on the charm, the tail would whisper what he was really up to.

Man, his song number was great, but this might have made it even better.

On another note, I think I may have got a tad overambitious with those cape folds. I guess I’ve got some practice to make in drawing cloth in my near future.
