Part 3 (You are here)
Sometime around mid-afternoon Ambrosia started to feel it. The sagging, squishy, squelchy feeling between her hind legs. She tried to concentrate on her work, but ultimately she knew that she needed a diaper change. And the worst part was that she had completely forgotten to pack any extras.
“Alright ponies, break time!” she said, a little more frantically than she would have liked. As the ponies looked at her in confusion, she said, “I’m giving you guys an early one. Make the most of it!”
As the work ponies filed out of the work zone to take their breaks, Ambrosia walked toward her house. She had been dreading this since she woke up. Not that she minded getting the sagging, soggy diaper off her flank, but rather how much she knew she would struggle with it. Earth-Ponies are not the most dextrous of ponies, and Ambrosia had never been particularly coordinated. It had taken her nearly an hour that morning to get her diaper changed, and she knew that she wouldn’t be able to get it done in time to get back to the work site. If only these stupid things lasted longer…
Turning about a block from her house, she knew the only answer to this. One of her Unicorn friends, Blossom Hearts, owned a daycare, and she was fairly confident that she had taken care of this sort of problem before. Sighing with regret, she walked up to the door and knocked. Instantly a happy face popped up in the window, holding up a hoof to her mouth. The door opened, and out stepped Blossom Hearts. “Amber!” she said in stage whisper. “It’s naptime. Can I help you?”
“Um… “ Ambrosia rubbed her withers and stared at the sidewalk. “The thing is… and I normally wouldn’t ask this of anypony…”
As she stammered, Blossom got a look at her drooping diaper. “Say no more,” she said. “I take it you need a little help, huh?”
“Yeah,” muttered Ambrosia. “Can we do this at my place? I’ve got the stuff there, and I don’t want the foals to see me.”
“They won’t mind,” said Blossom, “Most of them don’t even care about adults. But I can understand if you’re not comfortable.”
“I’m not,” said Ambrosia. “But I have to get back to work in thirty minutes and I can’t get the darn things on in less than an hour.”
Nodding, Blossom turned around and said, “Peachy Keen, can you watch the foals for a minute? I need to run an errand.”
After a few minutes of walking, they both arrived at Ambrosia’s house. “Where are your changing supplies?” said Blossom.
“Can we not call it that?”
“Well, what would you want me to call it?”
Ambrosia said nothing.
“Well, if you don’t have any alternatives, then that’s what I’ll call it. Now, where are they?”
“Down the hall in my room,” said Ambrosia. She led Blossom down the hallway toward her bedroom and opened the door for her. Inside the well-kept sleeping area was a large bed, beside which was a small plastic package of diapers. Frowning, Blossom said, “Where are the wipes and rash cream and other things?”
Shrugging, Ambrosia said, “I dunno. The doctor gave me a list of stuff, but I haven’t had time or energy to go shopping lately.” The slight irritation in her voice was not lost on Blossom Hearts.
“Wait right here,” said Blossom, then she shot out the door. Ambrosia wondered where she was going, then suddenly she returned with a big, childish bag. “I take this with me when I take the little ones to the park. All the supplies are here. I just need you to lie down for me.”
“But isn’t that stuff for babies?” said Ambrosia as she eyed the diaper bag.
“It’ll work just as well on a mare. Now, lie down.”
“Can’t we do this standing up?”
“I thought you needed to be back at work.”
“I do!”
“Then why are you wasting time arguing? Lay down now before I pick you up and lay you down myself!”
Sensing her imminent defeat, Ambrosia sighed and glared at Blossom as she set her hardhat on the floor and laid herself down on the soft carpet, wincing as she felt the diaper squish against her backside. Wasting no time, Blossom levitated one of the fresh diapers over and unfolded it, and before Ambrosia could ask what she was doing she had slipped it under the wet diaper and rested Ambrosia down on the soft, fresh padding. Then she quickly undid the tapes of the diaper and pulled it open, and before Ambrosia could voice a single word of protest she had taken a wipe from the diaper bag and started to clean off the damp fur underneath. “Yipe! Cold!”
“Sorry, honey,” said Blossom. “I’ll be done in a second.”
Scowling at being called such a juvenile name, Ambrosia relaxed and sighed, trying desperately not to look Blossom in the eye as she felt her fur get cleaned off. In addition to the coldness of the wipe, Ambrosia also felt inexplicable soreness. She wondered for a moment whether the wipe was causing it. “You really should have gotten those supplies, Amber,” said Blossom as she balled up the wipes and diaper and taped them together. “You’re developing a bit of a rash.”
“A what?”
“Didn’t the doctor tell you to put on foal powder and rash cream to prevent diaper rash?”
Her blush going even harder, Ambrosia realized that she had zoned out during most of the doctor’s lecture on proper skin care. She shrugged. “I guess I skipped that part.”
Rolling her eyes, Blossom took out a tube of what looked like toothpaste and squirted out a bit into her hoof. Then she gently began to rub it on Ambrosia’s diaper area. Ambrosia felt at once chilled at the slightly cool cream and relieved as she felt the slight burning sensation subside. As soon as her normally yellow coat was slathered in a nice shade of white, Ambrosia caught a whiff of something sweet and oddly calming. She looked up at Blossom, who had opened a small plastic container and was shaking some white, powdery substance on her. Foal powder, by the look of it.
As soon as the powder was applied, Blossom set down the can and quickly pulled the front of the fresh diaper up and snuggly taped it in place. “There we are! Good as new!” She couldn’t resist giving Ambrosia’s new diaper a couple of gentle pats.
After getting to her feet, Ambrosia sighed. “Thanks.”
“Any time! And look! It only took five minutes!”
Frowning in disbelief, Ambrosia looked at the clock in the hallway. It was still only halfway through break. “Huh! Well that’s weird! It took me all morning to get changed!”
“Glad I could be of help!” said Blossom as she tied the sides of the plastic bag up around the wet diaper. “And until you get the hang of doing this yourself, I’m always happy to help!”
“I don’t know if I’ll ever get the hang of this,” said Ambrosia as she rubbed her neck. Then she looked up at Blossom with a smile. “But I’m grateful for your help.”
“Any time!” said Blossom cheerfully.
As the two mares parted company and Ambrosia trotted to the work site, she had a big grin on her face. It truly wasn’t as bad as she had thought it would be.
